The Administrative Appeals Tribunal has upheld the ACNC’s decision to refuse to register three companies as charities.

People who want to donate money to help thousands of people affected by the disaster in Tonga are being urged to first check the official Charity Register to make sure their donation goes to a real charity.

The ACNC is urging people to be cautious when they make a donation to help people impacted by the disastrous floods in south-east Queensland. Commissioner Dr Gary Johns recommends donors check the Charity Register first.

The ACNC Commissioner has today announced a blanket extension to the due date for the 2021 Annual Information Statement (AIS) for charities affected by the recent Queensland floods.

Following compliance investigations, the ACNC revoked the registrations of 15 charities in 2021. The organisations were found to have breached the ACNC Act or the Governance Standards.

Each year thousands of new Australian charities are established but more than half of all applications to be officially registered do not result in registration.

Some charities must have a whistleblower policy. The requirement applies to charities structured as public companies limited by guarantee with annual consolidated revenue of $1 million.    

Earlier this year, the Australian Government announced proposed amendments to Governance Standard 3 regarding charities that engage in unlawful activity. However, the proposed changes were subject to a disallowance motion in the Senate on 25 November, meaning no change will take effect.
