On 31 January 2019, the Queensland Government announced that the flooding in the Townsville district had been declared a disaster for the purposes of establishing Australian disaster relief funds.

New and existing funds that provide relief to people in the communities affected by the floods are eligible for Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status, which allow tax deductible donations for a period of two years from 31 January 2019. For information on establishing an Australian disaster relief fund, visit ato.gov.au, or call 1300 130 248.

The ACNC would like to offer our support to the community, and thank the charities that have already provided much needed assistance during the floods.

Devastating events often bring out great generosity in people and we encourage those who want to donate to search for charities using the ACNC Charity Register. You can search for key words like “emergency” or “disaster” and limit the results to Queensland, for example.

Charities that are already established in the community are often best placed to provide support. We encourage donors to contact charities to find out what they need during and after a disaster. Contact information for a registered charity is available on the ACNC Charity Register.

For those seeking assistance, information can be found on the Australian Government’s Disaster Assist website at disasterassist.gov.au and the Queensland Government’s Disaster management website at disaster.qld.gov.au.
