Northern Territory charities will benefit from reduced red tape due to a new streamlined reporting option between the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) and Licensing NT.

The new exemption, which comes into effect on 1 July 2019, applies to charities registered with both Licensing NT and the ACNC.

Acting ACNC Commissioner Catherine Willis says this is a great outcome for charities based in the Northern Territory.

“This is welcome relief for registered charities that are also incorporated associations in the Northern Territory.

“The change will mean that charities registered with the ACNC and Licensing NT will no longer need to submit an annual return to both agencies. They will only have to submit an annual return once to the ACNC.

“Today’s announcement reflects our commitment to red tape reduction, and we are pleased that we have been able to work with the Northern Territory government to ease the administrative burden on charities” Ms Willis said.

Acting Director-General, Sally Ozolins from Licensing NT confirmed the new streamlined reporting arrangement could save hundreds of charities from duplicating their annual return to both agencies.

“We’re pleased to confirm that charities will be exempt from providing their financial statements to Licensing NT, if they comply with the requirements of the exemption.

“We have sent letters to eligible charities directly” Ms Ozolins said.

The announcement of reduced red tape for Northern Territory charities is the latest in a series of measures the ACNC has implemented with State and Territory agencies to harmonise reporting requirements and minimise duplication of reporting for charities.
