Giving Tuesday is a global day of generosity, this year marked on 1 December.
Established in 2012, Giving Tuesday encourages people to donate to charity, to be generous with their time and money, and do good. In Australia, the movement is led by Our Community, and hundreds of Australian charities are taking part this year.
ACNC Commissioner, the Hon Dr Gary Johns, said it is a wonderful opportunity for Australians to support the charity sector, which has faced unprecedented challenges in 2020.
“Australians donate billions of dollars to charities each year. However, we anticipate that this year the level of donations will be impacted by COVID-19. The message of generosity at the heart of Giving Tuesday is perhaps more important than ever,” Dr Johns said.
“There are many ways to give. More than 3.5 million volunteers work in Australia’s charity sector and nearly half of all charities operate without staff.
“Giving your time as a volunteer is a true act of generosity. Donating professional services, knitting blankets, wrapping Christmas presents – contributing whatever skills you have makes a difference.”
Dr Johns urged people to check the ACNC Charity Register to ensure the organisation they would like to donate money or goods to is a legitimate charity.
