The Foreign Influence Transparency Scheme came into effect on 10 December 2018. Its purpose is to provide the public and government decision-makers with visibility of the nature, level and extent of foreign influence on Australia's government and political process.

The Scheme may apply to a limited number of charities. If your charity undertakes activities on behalf of a foreign principal, you may need to register.

A foreign principal is any of the following:

  • a foreign government
  • a foreign government-related entity
  • a foreign political organisation
  • a foreign government-related individual

The Attorney General’s Department has a range of resources which can help you determine if you need to register.
