The ACNC is proud to announce the release of a Statement of Commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, reinforcing the ACNC’s dedication to fostering meaningful relationships with First Nations communities across Australia.

ACNC Commissioner Sue Woodward AM emphasised the significance of this commitment, saying that the ACNC deeply values the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to the ACNC and to the broader charity and not-for-profit sector. “This Statement is a testament to our resolve to incorporate their expertise and experience into our vision for charities that inspire confidence and respect,” Ms Woodward said.

The Statement acknowledges the diverse aspirations of First Nations communities and the pivotal role their organisations play in driving community-led outcomes. It also recognises that traditional notions of ‘charity’ may not align with Indigenous perspectives and the work of many First Nations organisations that are aiming to shift the narrative towards strength and empowerment rather than benevolence.

This initiative complements the Australian Taxation Office’s (ATO) Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) for July 2024 – June 2027, which extends to all ATO employees, including those at the ACNC. The RAP outlines actions to enhance economic inclusion and equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, establish cultural competency within organisations, and improve service offerings tailored to Indigenous clients.

Ms Woodward highlighted the connection between the ACNC’s Statement of Commitment and the ATO’s RAP. “Our commitment reflects a unified approach to reconciliation and support for First Nations communities. Together, we strive to create an environment where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees and organisations thrive,” she said.

“We are developing an action plan to address how the ACNC will meet these commitments. It will focus on building understanding and appreciation of First Nations cultures, collaborating with First Nations organisations, peak bodies and other regulators to reduce regulatory burdens, and fostering a culturally safe workplace where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees can flourish.

“We look forward to continuing our journey towards reconciliation, embedding meaningful engagement with First Nations charities, and contributing to a more inclusive and equitable Australia.”
