In 2015/16 the OpenAustralia Foundation helped people participate directly and positively in political processes. We connected people with their elected representatives, helping them see what they say in parliament and how they vote on changes to our laws. We let people know about local planning proposals and helped them participate in the planning process. We made it easier for people to request information held by federal, state, and local government authorities on their behalf. We helped people collect data from their governments by sharing our knowledge of web scraping and running scrapers for civil society, private and public institutions and individuals. We helped people participate in creating Australia’s first Open Government Partnership (OGP) National Action Plan and made sure our OGP commitments were as ambitious as possible in creating practical change for citizens. We provided these services through OpenAustralia.org, TheyVoteForYou.org.au, PlanningAlerts.org.au, RightToKnow.org.au, ElectionLeaflets.org.au, OpenAustraliaFoundation.org.au, OpenGovernment.org.au, and morph.io. Over 925,000 people visited these online services during the period. We launched a major new feature of PlanningAlerts, enabling people to ask their elected local councillors about planning proposals and get help participating in the local planning process. This involved establishing Australia’s first freely available comprehensive list of local councillors and their contact information.
