The ACNC has published a new de-identified registration decision summary which looks at aspects of charity registration in relation to an organisation that engaged in sporting activities.

This summary is part of our work to publish more information about our regulatory activities, which in turn aims to improve transparency and help educate both the charity sector and the general public.

This decision summary focuses on an organisation that applied to the ACNC for registration as a charity, but whose objects included ‘engaging in community sport’.

Generally, the purpose of promoting sport is not a recognised charitable purpose. However, where sporting activities are promoted to further a charitable purpose, this does not prevent charity registration.

The decision summary outlines how the ACNC sought to gain a greater understanding of the organisation’s work – including how it pursued its object of creating sports events in practice – and how this understanding helped inform the ACNC’s decision making processes.

All de-identified registration decision summaries are available on the ACNC website.
